CW Words Student Edition: Major Multi-User Upgrade (Teacher + Student Experience)
We just shipped a full reliability and usability upgrade for CW Words Student Edition (cw-words-student-edition.html), focused on real classroom flow: clearer session control for teachers, less confusion for students, better synchronization, and stronger safety in answer handling.
This update came directly from real usage and feedback. Here is what changed.
What’s New
1. Server-Enforced Answer Deadlines
Timing is now enforced on the backend, not only in UI flow.
- If a student submits after the word deadline, the API rejects it with a timeout response.
- This prevents late submissions from slipping through during lag or refresh/reconnect edge cases.
- Result: fairer scoring and consistent behavior across all clients.
2. Student Audio Preflight Wizard
Students now get an explicit audio preflight flow before session start.
- Dedicated “Start Audio Preflight” action in student controls.
- Guided modal to play a test sample and confirm they can hear CW clearly.
- “Audio checked” state is visible to teacher in participant list.
This reduces “joined but can’t hear anything” starts.
3. Optional Start Gate: Require Audio Check
Teachers can now enable:
- Require all students to complete audio preflight before start
When enabled, start is blocked until connected non-observer students finish audio check (with force-start override if needed).
This creates cleaner session starts and fewer mid-session interruptions.
4. Replay Current Word to All (Controlled)
Teachers now have direct replay control for active words:
- Replay Current Word button
- Configurable:
- replay count (e.g., 1x–5x)
- delay between repeats (seconds)
Replay events are synchronized to participants in real time.
5. Better Session Timing + Control Cohesion
Timing options are now cleaner and better aligned:
- Timeout settings and auto-proceed behavior are synchronized across session updates.
- Real-time state payloads now carry timing/replay/gate settings more consistently.
- UI controls refresh correctly after reconnects/snapshots.
6. Stronger Multi-User State Integrity
Under the hood, the session model now better handles:
- readiness + audio check state
- mute/observer constraints
- active student eligibility counting
- consistent status transitions during timeout/progression paths
This improves trust in teacher dashboards and progression behavior.
7. Reporting Upgrade: Mistake Analytics
Session report export now includes richer analysis:
- Per-word mistake analytics
- Most missed characters
- Included in report outputs so teachers can identify where students struggle most (not just overall scores).
Why This Matters
This module is designed for live teacher-led Morse training. In that context, “almost working” is not enough.
A good classroom module must be deterministic: when a teacher presses start/replay/timeout, every student session should behave predictably.
This update pushes CW Words Student Edition much closer to that standard.

Suggested Classroom Flow (Now Recommended)
- Teacher creates session and shares code.
- Students join and run audio preflight.
- Teacher verifies ready + audio checked list.
- Teacher starts session (with optional audio gate enabled).
- During words, teacher can replay current word with controlled repeat/delay.
- Session ends with richer error analytics for review.
We’ll keep tuning this module based on your reports.
If you spot timing, sync, audio, or control edge cases, keep sending them.
